THE 5 BARREL BREWERY
The 5 Barrel Brewery is a great example of a brand with a story. One of the co-owners/brewers of this recent addition to downtown Pensacola is descended from an infamous Gulf Coast bootlegger.
The “5” used in the logo is inspired by the number on a Prohibition-era 5 dollar bill given to the owner by his grandfather. The bottom of the barrel starts out in shadow and gradually comes into the light, hinting at the criminalization of alcohol sales and consumption and its eventual return to the mainstream. The grain in the logo represents the rough and tumble lifestyle of bootleggers of old, and the custom font used on “Barrel” reflects the quality and craft put into ever beer they brew.
I partnered with The 5 Barrel again during Pensacon, Pensacola’s comic and pop culture convention. The brewery hosted a themed Dungeons and Dragons party, and I designed an illustration for their pint glasses commemorating the evening.
